Custodian
Summary
The Custodian supports the Production Department through regular, routine cleaning protocols, supports food film product production by cleaning and sanitizing the production lines, and assists in the inspection and/or general maintenance of the buildings and grounds.
Summary/Objective:
The Custodian supports the Production Department through regular, routine cleaning protocols, supports food film product production by cleaning and sanitizing the production lines, and assists in the inspection and/or general maintenance of the buildings and grounds.
The primary job functions of a Custodian are to:
1. Routinely collect and empty household trash from the production floor,
2. Routinely clean the floor areas around the production lines using blowers and/or brooms and scoops,
3. Routinely maintain the floor in the Commons area of Building 2 (excluding breakroom floors),
4. Clean production lines in Building 2 according to the schedule and criteria outlined in checklists provided,
5. Execute Cleaning Orders prior to production of food film products,
6. Perform routine inspections of the facility as outlined in checklists provided,
7. Support the general cleanliness and function of the facility as needed.
Qualifications:
A Custodian must demonstrate the following basic skills and abilities from the date of their hire. These include:
1. The ability to understand and follow PPE rules and safety requirements as instructed,
2. The ability to read and comprehend simple instructions at a level commiserate with their educational level,
3. The ability to perform basic math, including simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers,
4. The ability to understand and follow shift rotation schedules and to report for work as directed.
Essential Functions:
The following essential job functions are required for a Custodian:
1. Read, follow, and accurately complete checklists and other documents that define work requirements.
2. Safely operate a forklift and know the following requirements when doing so, which include:
a. Seat belts must be worn at all times when operating equipment
b. Horns must be sounded at all crossings and blind spots
c. Forks must be kept close to the ground when driving without a load
d. Speed of the lift must be no greater than a brisk walk
e. Load being lifted must not exceed the load capacity of the lift.
f. When transporting a load that impairs the driver’s forward vision, the lift must be driven in reverse, giving the driver clear vision in his direction of travel.
3. Safely operate the trash “dump hopper” in a manner that prevents personal injury or damage to the facility.
4. Support food film production by effectively cleaning and sanitizing film lines in Building 2 in accordance with Cleaning Order requirements, which include:
a. Climb and work at all levels of the production line,
b. Perform wash and rinse regimens in accordance with the guidelines for food safety,
c. Perform sanitizing regimens in accordance with the guidelines for food safety.
5. Routinely clean the “Angel Hair” traps at the bottom of each resin silo.
6. Perform weekly and monthly inspections, documenting non-conformities, and turning the required paperwork in to designated personnel.
7. Perform assigned duties that maintain the appearance and function of the facility, such as painting and cleaning pellet traps.
8. Conform with the PPE requirements and Safety Rules.
PPE requirements and Safety rules:
1. Eye protection is required anywhere in the plant.
2. Gloves resistant to chemicals, such as cleaning soaps and sanitizing chemicals, must be worn when such materials are used, or when performing other job duties, such as painting where protection from chemicals is required.
3. Hearing protection is required when crossing the blue lines that are painted on the floor, heading toward the machines.
4. Safety-toed shoes or boots are required everywhere in the plant.
5. Cut gloves are required to be worn on the opposite hand you use to hold a knife when cutting.
6. Maximum weight allowed to be lifted by one person is 80 pounds. Anything heavier requires the aid of another person, forklift, big Joe, or roll handlers.
7. Employees must remain within the confines of handrails and exercise fall protection measures, including limitations of reach, when working at heights.
8. Employees must know and follow lockout/tagout requirements when there is potential for exposure to hazardous energy.
9. Each machine is equipped with multiple safety switches and devices. Although the features are not the same for each machine, they all have safety devices in place to protect employees from injury. These include pressure-sensitive mats, light curtains, pull cords, and emergency stop buttons. The Custodian must know where these devices are located and how they operate.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Competencies:
1. Ability to read, understand, and complete the work instructions and inspection checklists,
2. Ability to stand on feet for multiple hours at a time,
3. Ability to perform basic math skills; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and simple division,
4. Ability to safely operate a forklift in tight spaces,
5. Ability to complete online training.

The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. The employee must be able to safely climb onto and off of forklifts and operate the controls on the lift, including gas and brake pedals, steering wheels, and hand controls for raising, lowering, and tilting loads.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
