Resin Handler
Summary
The Resin Handler unloads resins from railcars and bulk trucks into storage silos, continuously unloading railcars in a manner that maximizes the speed of the unloading process while minimizing the formation of angel hair in the bulk materials system.
The person in this position handles cleaning the angel hair traps at the bottom of each silo each day. This position cleans up spilled resin inside and outside of the silos, including spills by the rail tracks and ensures that the resin is properly labeled and stored. Those holding this job inspect and empty the blue rail catch bins by the rail tracks on an as-needed basis, but no less than daily (e.g., each shift).
As needed by the demands of the shift, the Resin Handler helps bale scrap and assists in clean-up activities on the production floor and/or warehouse buildings.
Essential Functions:
1. For those working the night shift (8:00 PM to 8:00 AM): Must complete the railcar inventory by 7:00AM each day and deliver that report to the Shift Supervisor or acting Shift Supervisor in person.This is a critical function for this position!
2. Must be able to understand and interpret all MSE resin codes.
3. Must understand the silo numbering system and which silos are used for each designated production area.
4. Must read, understand, and complete all pumping order documents and pump resins into an identified silo, following the pump order instructions.
5. Must be proficient in controlling and operating all the resin pumps used to unload railcars using the control panel settings.
6. Must be able to properly adjust the air inlet settings on the resin transfer hoses to maximize the pumping rates of railcar unloading.
7. Must ensure the pump is always pumping properly and follow the second verification process to ensure the resin is sent to the proper silo before starting the pump.
8. Understand and comply with resin transfer storage, including requirements to cap or plug unused resin lines and transfer hoses.
9. Must ensure resin is pumping whenever space is available in a silo.
10. Must fully empty resin from railcars and prepare them for release back to the railroad by properly securing the caps on the suction tubes so they do not come loose in transit.
11. Must open the gate to the rail spur, take down the “safety flag” allowing rail car switches, replace the “safety flag” after the switch is complete, and close and lock the gate.
12. Each shift, must inspect and clean angel hair traps in the bottom of the bank of silos.
13. Each shift, must clean up spills from the bottoms of silos and properly store the cleaned-up resin in the appropriately labeled boxes.
14. Help bale scrap when directed.
15. Help clean up on the production floor when directed.
16. You must conform to PPE requirements and Safety Rules.
PPE requirements and Safety Rules:
1. Eye protection is required everywhere in the plant
2. Hearing protection is required if not inside an office.
3. Safety-toed shoes or boots are required everywhere in the plant.
4. Cut gloves are required to be worn on the opposite hand you use to hold a knife when cutting.
5. Leather gloves may be required when removing railcar and/or bulk truck seals.
6. The maximum weight allowed to be lifted by one person is 80 pounds. Anything heavier requires the aid of another person, forklift, Big Joe, or roll handlers.
Competencies:
1. Ability to safely operate a forklift.
2. Ability to read and follow instructions written in English.
3. Ability to legibly complete written reports using the English language.
4. Ability to inspect and verify that car seals or other tamper indicators used on cars and bulk trucks have not been broken.
5. Ability to determine when a car is completely empty and ready to return.
6. Ability to use a tape measure to an accuracy of ± 1/8”.
7. Ability to do simple math.

9. Ability to physically drag the resin pump hose up and down the rail siding.
10. Ability to lift and properly store the resin pump hose on the racks by the spur.
Work Environment:
This job operates both inside and outside of a plant environment. During the assigned shift, resin pumping occurs outside in all-weather environments (e.g., heat, cold, rain, and precipitation, including freezing rain and snow). The work inside the plant and in the silo skirts occurs primarily in an ambient environment (e.g., not heated or cooled).
Physical Demands
Routinely lifts 40 to 60 pounds. Stands 80% of the day. Pulls, kneels, bends and reaches overhead 20% of the day. Occasionally lifts resin transfer hoses weighing as much as 80 pounds. (Note: Hoses or other items exceeding the 80# limit require assistance.) Mounts and dismounts a forklift properly (e.g., using the footholds).
Position Type and Expected Work Hours
This is a full-time, hourly position. Work hours are 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM or 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM on a rotating monthly schedule. The work week is based on a seven-day cycle, and workdays vary every other week, with employees working 36 hours and 48 hours, respectively. Some overtime is required.
Education and Experience:
1. High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) is required for this position.
